The Challenge: Reliable Ferry Service in a UNESCO Area
Jitze Landman, Senior Superintendent at Rederij Doeksen, highlights the dual responsibility of the project. “Reliability is our primary goal, but we must operate sustainably within the Wadden Sea ecosystem. This requires a future-proof energy solution that could handle rigorous daily operations while reducing our environmental footprint.”
The solution was not adding more engines, but optimize the existing LNG propulsion with a high-capacity marine battery system.
The Solution: Hybrid Battery Integration and Peak Shaving
The hybrid refit involved installing a massive MG Energy Systems battery bank and permanent magnet motors. This configuration enables several critical operational benefits:
- Peak Shaving:
The battery system absorbs load fluctuations, allowing the main LNG engines to run at constant, optimal efficiency. - Zero-Emission Harbor Mode:
The Willem de Vlamingh can dock and maneuver in silence. With all engines stopped, the vessel operates entirely on battery power, eliminating noise and exhaust fumes for passengers and the environment. - Fuel Efficiency:
The hybrid setup significantly reduces fuel consumption and wear on the main engines.
Technical Deep Dive: MG RS Series Battery System
Safety and performance are non-negotiable in commercial shipping. Rederij Doeksen integrated the MG RS 230 LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery series, specifically designed for large-scale maritime applications.
Key System Specifications:
- Capacity: Approximately 850 kWh of high-voltage energy storage.
- Chemistry: Safe and robust LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) technology.
- Cooling: Advanced liquid cooling for optimal temperature management and longevity.
- Safety Features: Integrated Thermal Runaway Ducting and redundant battery strings to ensure continuous operation, even in the unlikely event of a cell failure.
“We chose MG Energy Systems for their proven track record in maritime safety and the compact, water-cooled design of their systems,” notes Landman. “On a passenger vessel, the guaranteed safety features of the MG RS series were the deciding factor.”
A Blueprint for Sustainable Maritime Operations
While full-electric ferry travel depends on future shore-side charging infrastructure, this hybrid battery refit proves that modernization of existing fleets is possible today. Rederij Doeksen is leading the way, gaining the operational data needed for the next generation of zero-emission vessels.
