The MG Story of Lumen

In this latest showcase of our customer series, we step aboard the fully electric Lumen E10 in Drachten, Friesland, to explore how high-voltage technology and modular battery systems are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on the water.

The Challenge: Range Without Compromise

For years, the luxury maritime sector viewed 100% electric propulsion with a hint of “range anxiety.” To achieve a range of up to 160 km without the weight of traditional lead-acid batteries, every component had to be optimized.

We try to optimize the whole boat in terms of efficiency, design, weight, best technology, lightest batteries, lightest engines… all to serve efficiency“, says Jaap de Jonge.

The solution? A lightweight Mulder Design hull paired with a high-energy-density battery system that doesn’t just power the boat, but monitors itself with surgical precision.

The Technical Setup: High Voltage for High Efficiency

The heart of the Lumen E10 is a powerful High Voltage (HV) system. While many electric boats rely on low voltage for simpler applications, the E10 utilizes a 360 Vdc nominal voltage system.

Key System Specifications:

  • Propulsion Power: 360 Vdc High Voltage system.
  • Battery Capacity: ~82 kWh total energy.
  • Battery Configuration: 14x MG LFP 230 Ah batteries connected in series.
  • Management: MG Master HV 300 A for safety and integration.
  • Monitoring: Individual cell-level monitoring via SmartLink MX and the MG Energy Portal.

Decision Clarity: Why Individual Monitoring Matters

When you are miles from the coast, reliability isn’t just a feature — it’s a requirement. One of the most critical aspects of the MG system on the Lumen E10 is the ability to monitor each of the 14 batteries individually.

What MG makes unique is that we don’t look at one big block of data“, Jaap explains. “I see here on my screen the status of all 14 batteries separately. Voltage, temperature, State of Health… if something happens in one cell, I know it directly. That gives our customers the certainty they expect from a premium yacht.

This level of detail mitigates both end-user fear and professional risk. For the owner, it’s the peace of mind that their investment is secure. For the builder, it’s the ease of maintenance and the ability to offer remote support anywhere in the world.

A Partnership Built on Engineering

The synergy between Lumen Yachts and MG Energy Systems goes beyond just supplying parts. As two Dutch engineering-based companies, the focus is on creating an integrated product rather than a collection of bolted-on components.

You get not only a supplier but a technical partner“, says Jaap. “They really know their technology. They know their equipment. It helps a lot to work with suppliers that are also really engineering-based.

Experience the Future of Sailing

Sailing with Lumen is described by Jaap in three words: Fun, Silent, and Luxury. It’s about leaving no trace — no fumes, no smell, and no noise — while enjoying the water in its purest form.
